Good news for the Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is undoubtedly one of the most breath-taking icons of Australia. In 2017, scientists declared that the barrier reef was officially ‘terminal’, due to ocean warming, brittle sea stars and the effects of pollution.
However, the Federal Budget has seen an amount of $535.8 million locked in to help the Reef, and extra funding for Indigenous rangers. The money will be allocated toward a 5 year reef scheme aiming to improve water quality and controlling pests. Good news for the reef and for our future generations!

Lego goes green
It turns out stepping on a brick isn’t the most pain Lego can cause. The sheer amount of plastic items produced every hour by Lego means more and more plastic that ends up in landfills each year!
In an effort to reduce their negative impact on the environment, Lego is producing toys made from plant-based plastic. They company is making little plastic trees and bushes as part of it’s range – using ethanol extracted from Brazilian sugarcane.
While it is a nice idea, and something we’d definitely be happy to introduce to our playrooms, it is only a small step in the right direction. These new items only represent a small percentage of the Lego range, and they don’t have plans to replace all their items with this plant-based plastic just yet!

Giant Sunshade to solve Global Warming?
Okay, we are super skeptical too. But we did find this really interesting!
First of all, scientists have simply suggested this may help developing countries, which are most susceptible to the effects of global warming. The article, however, states “The technique is controversial, and rightly so,” they add. “It is too early to know what its effects would be: it could be very helpful or very harmful. Developing countries have most to gain or lose. In our view, they must maintain their climate leadership and play a central part in research and discussions around solar geoengineering.”
It honestly sounds like something out a science fiction movie, but it is nice to know scientists are looking at major changes to help us protect the earth!

War on Plastics
- It is estimated that to break down a plastic bag, it can take anywhere from 20 to 1000 years!
- We have produced more plastic in the last 10 years than we did in the last century.
- A plastic water bottle can take 450 years to break down if left on a beach.
- Over 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds die each year from ingesting or becoming entangled in plastic litter.
- According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, less than 1% of plastic bags used in Australia are reused, however 82.6% of Australian households say that they reuse plastic bags.
- If each Australian family used one less plastic shopping bag each week, Australians would save 253 million plastic bags a year (image what completely eliminating them would do!)
Shopping at Naked Foods instead of your local supermarket when you can (our products are NAKED because they aren’t packaged in plastic) and saying no to plastic bags when you shop elsewhere is a great place to start!
